Mount Remarkable sits in the Southern Flinders Ranges: a 960 m summit, a quartzite gorge, river-red-gum camping at Mambray Creek, and mountain-bike trails around Melrose and Willowie. Which entrance you use, whether a van can legally go down the gorge road, and whether CFS has shut the park will shape the day more than any photo list.
This guide is an unofficial operator’s manual: which walk to pick first, how vehicle entry differs from camping fees, when overnight hiking is banned, and what to verify on parks.sa.gov.au the morning you go.

Summit hike
hardLoop from the War Memorial Monument trailhead above Melrose to the 960 m summit. Expansive views over Willochra Plain, Horseshoe Range, Black Range and (clear days) Spencer Gulf. Rocky, steep and exposed — not a short lookout walk.

The Narrows

Southern Flinders realism is not optional reading
- Three gates, no public through-road. Pick one node per day.
- Alligator Gorge access is unsuitable for caravans, trailers and buses. Leave long vehicles in Wilmington or Melrose.
- Vehicle entry and camping are separate systems. Pay entry before arrival; book camping before you set up.
- Park closes on Catastrophic fire-danger days and may close on Extreme. Overnight / backpack sites close in fire-danger season.
- Coverage is patchy in gorges and low ground. Install Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi. 000 needs a signal.

Four nodes, different jobs
Mambray is the west-side facilities hub. Alligator Gorge is the quartzite slot. Melrose is the summit and Epic Trail town. Willowie is forest MTB. Do not treat them as one loop.
Mambray Creek
Best for: Camping, families, first west-side visit, Hidden Gorge start
West-side facilities hub off National Highway 1: river red gums, the main campground, short family loops, Hidden Gorge and Sugar Gum Lookout. Best first base if you want toilets, showers and a picnic before a longer walk.

Alligator Gorge
Best for: Gorge walking, photography, cooler-season drama
Northern node: red quartzite cliffs, The Narrows, the longer Alligator Gorge hike, and Blue Gum Flat picnic area. Dramatic, steep access, limited facilities. Confirm live closures after the 2025 Wilmington fire.

East-side town at the foot of Mount Remarkable. Summit hike trailhead (War Memorial Monument), Remarkable Epic Trail start, Southern Flinders Rail Trail link, and the closest commercial beds to the 960 m climb.

Beginner and intermediate mountain-bike network (with some difficult sections) in historic sugar-gum / native pine forest. Picnic, toilets, accessible parking. Walkers may use historical forest access tracks — obey signs.

One hard walk: Mount Remarkable Summit Hike from the War Memorial Monument trailhead. Start in the cool, carry enough water, and leave time for the drive — not Hidden Gorge as well.

Is there an entry fee for Mount Remarkable National Park?
Yes. Vehicle entry is listed at $14.40 per vehicle on the official park page when this guide was re-checked (13 September 2026) — pay before you arrive. Camping and park accommodation are a completely separate per-night system (official listing showed accommodation from $27.50 per night). Amounts change — confirm on parks.sa.gov.au. This site never affiliates vehicle entry or official camping.
How long from Adelaide?
Official park page lists 263.45 km from Adelaide — plan about 3–3.5 hours each way. You can squeeze in one short stop as a same-day return; most people are better overnighting in Melrose or at Mambray Creek. There is no practical public transport into the park. What should I do on a first visit?
Pick one node. Melrose: Summit Hike if you are fit (13 km / 4 hrs, hard). Alligator Gorge: The Narrows (2 km / 2 hrs) — no caravans on the access road. Mambray Creek: Wirra Water and Daveys Gully plus picnic/camping facilities. Do not stack the summit and Hidden Gorge on a first afternoon.
Is Alligator Gorge open after the 2025 fire?
Most of the park is open. The 27 July 2026 fire-recovery alert listed Alligator Gorge hub, The Narrows, Hidden Gorge and the summit as open; Ali Lookout Walk/platform and Alligator Lodge as closed. A section of Alligator Gorge may still be restricted on live maps. [VERIFY] parks.sa.gov.au the morning you go.
Is mobile coverage reliable?
No. Official wording: coverage can be patchy and unreliable, especially in low-lying areas. 000 needs reception. Install Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi. On the summit, Hidden Gorge or Black Range Trek, a personal locator beacon is worth considering.
Can I bring a dog or a caravan to the gorge?
No pets (assistance dogs under official rules). Alligator Gorge access is unsuitable for caravans, camper trailers and buses. Mambray Creek campground can take vans — check site dimensions. Leave long vehicles off the gorge road.
Is this site official NPWS SA?
No. Independent unofficial guide published by Farming Domains (Ian Piggott / ABN 66 786 225 704). For alerts, fees, camping and official rules use parks.sa.gov.au only. Free downloads are never email-gated.
