The Narrows, Alligator Gorge

Alligator Gorge is the photograph people mean when they say Mount Remarkable. It is also a different driveway, a different vehicle rule, and a live closures map you should open before you leave Wilmington.
The Narrows as the default

Steps down from Alligator Gorge Lookout car park, Terraces to the north, Narrows to the south, return via Blue Gum Flat. Uneven boulder floor, possibly wet. Sturdy shoes. This 2 km listing still takes up to two hours if you move carefully.

The full Alligator Gorge hike follows the gorge then Ring Route Track past Eaglehawk Dam and Longhill camps to Blue Gum Flat. Optional Battery Ridge add-on about an extra hour. Only if you started early and the live map is clear.
Access road is the real hazard
Official: very steep, unsuitable for caravans, camper trailers and buses. Leave long vehicles in Wilmington or Melrose. One accessible parking space is listed — do not treat the car park as a coach bay. Pay vehicle entry before you drop in.
What not to add on the way home
Hidden Gorge starts at Mambray, not here. The summit starts at Melrose. Ali Lookout is not a 15-minute add-on while listed closed. Blue Gum Flat picnic is the reset, then the steep road back to Wilmington.

Towing down the gorge road. Starting the 8.5 km hike at 2pm. Trusting memory instead of the closures overlay PDF. Assuming 000 works on the gorge floor.

Can I take a caravan to Alligator Gorge?
No. Official wording: the access road is very steep and unsuitable for caravans, camper trailers and buses.
Is the gorge open after the 2025 fire?
Most of the park is open. The Narrows and Alligator Gorge hub were listed open on the 27 July 2026 recovery alert; Ali Lookout Walk/platform and Alligator Lodge were listed closed; a section of Alligator Gorge may still be restricted on the closures map. [VERIFY] the morning you go.
Is Hidden Gorge part of this node?
No. Hidden Gorge starts at Mambray Creek (18 km / 7 hrs). Alligator Gorge is the Wilmington driveway. Do not mix the names or the gates.
