Melrose & the summit
East-side town at the foot of Mount Remarkable. Summit hike trailhead (War Memorial Monument), Remarkable Epic Trail start, Southern Flinders Rail Trail link, and the closest commercial beds to the 960 m climb.
- Best for: Summit day, MTB, town services, overnight without camping
- Time: 4–5 hours on the ground for the summit; overnight recommended after Adelaide
- Melrose sits at the foot of the mountain. Walk or short drive to the trailhead behind the caravan park area. 2WD is normally fine to town.

Why Melrose is the summit base
The 960 m peak is climbed from this side. Town services matter: water, food, a bed, and a defined trailhead. If you camp at Mambray you can still do the summit, but you will drive around the range — there is no public through-road.
Epic Trail and Willowie
Remarkable Epic Trail is an intermediate closed loop of about 38–39 km starting in Melrose, with gradients, loose scree and fall exposure on sections. Willowie singletracks sit as a separate beginner/intermediate network with its own trailhead. Official Epic FAQ and PDF map beat any Strava screenshot.
Adelaide to Melrose
Official park distance from Adelaide is 263.45 km. Main North Road or Highway 1 then east over the ranges are the usual patterns — [VERIFY] CFS and road reports. 2WD is normally fine to town. There is no public summit road; you walk from the War Memorial Monument trailhead (road behind the caravan park). Do not block private or caravan-park access.
Overnight in Melrose is the default after that drive. Same-day return only if you leave before dawn and skip everything else.
What a summit day actually is
Official: 13 km return loop, about 4 hours, hard. Northern/Southern options, distance markers every 200 m on the classic route. Carry 2–3 L. No facilities on the trail. Plane-crash remnants on scree — look, do not souvenir wreckage. Lower eastern-face views still count if you turn around.
Vehicle entry still applies for park walking even if you slept in town. Do not pair with Hidden Gorge or a full Epic loop the same day.
Town services versus park
Melrose is the closest commercial beds, fuel and food to the 960 m climb. The national park starts at the signed trail, not at the pub. Southern Flinders Rail Trail (compacted gravel, creek crossings) links toward Wilmington for walkers and cyclists — a different product from the summit hike.
