Where you start

Mambray Creek Day Visitor Area

West-side hub. Vehicle entry applies. Carry binoculars if wildlife is the point.

How to get there

  1. Highway 1 to Mambray Creek day visitor area.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Follow the signed 8 km loop up-valley, then the climb to Sugar Gum Lookout.
  2. Visit Scarfes Hut as signed. Watch for wallabies at a distance — dawn and dusk are better than midday heat.
  3. Stay on the track. No drones buzzing wildlife.

What to expect

Official: 8 km loop, allow 3 hours, from Mambray Creek Day Visitor Area. Follow the creek upstream, then a short strenuous climb to Sugar Gum Lookout over the Alligator Creek / Mambray Creek junction. Scarfes Hut (restored shepherd’s home) is on the signed route. Yellow-footed rock-wallaby habitat — sightings are not guaranteed.

How the morning works

Dawn and dusk beat midday heat for wildlife. Carry binoculars if viewing is the point. Vehicle entry already paid. This is not Wirra Water stretched — the lookout climb is a genuine hike. Do not stack Hidden Gorge afterwards.

Hazards and etiquette

Short strenuous climb, heat, patchy coverage. Wildlife: stop, stay quiet, no food, no cornering animals. No drones buzzing wallabies. Stay on the track.

Turning around

Skip the lookout climb and stay in the valley if the group is done. The hut and creek are still a real walk.

Packing list (jacket, grip, water) lives on the gear hub, not as a shop list on every walk. Pairing and a shorter option: plan your visit · Wallaby viewing etiquette.
