Hidden Gorge Hike

Area: Mambray Creek

Loop from Mambray Creek Day Visitor Area along Mambray and Alligator creeks through Hidden Gorge (red quartzite, native pine) then a climb to Battery Ridge with views to Spencer Gulf.

Do not pair: Do not pair with the summit or Black Range Trek the same day.

Turnaround: Turn around at any creek junction and retrace to Mambray Creek. The gorge is not a through-hike you must finish.

  • Late start. Under-packing water. Stacking this after the summit.
  • Moderate–long (official listing)
  • Allow 7 hrs return
  • 18 km loop (official)
  • Effort: hard
  • Best for: Fit walkers wanting a full day of valley, gorge and ridge

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au (Mount Remarkable National Park) and current closures/alerts before you go. Alligator Gorge sections and Ali Lookout have carried post-fire restrictions.

Where you start

Mambray Creek Day Visitor Area

West-side hub off National Highway 1. Best facilities in the park (toilets, picnic/BBQ, nearby campground with showers). Vehicle entry applies. 2WD is normally fine to this node.

How to get there

  1. National Highway 1 to the Mambray Creek entrance, about 45 km north of Port Pirie. Official park page: 263.45 km from Adelaide.
  2. Park at the day visitor area. Do not occupy booked campsites.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Start early. 7 hours official time is a full day with photos and heat.
  2. Follow the signed loop along the creeks into Hidden Gorge, then the climb to Battery Ridge, and back to the day visitor area.
  3. Carry more water than the picnic tables imply. Take all rubbish — there are no bins.

What to expect

Official: 18 km loop, 7 hours, from Mambray Creek Day Visitor Area. Red quartzite walls, native pine, then a climb to Battery Ridge with coastal / Spencer Gulf views. Diversity of landforms is the point — budget the climb, not only the pretty gorge photos.

How the day works

Use Mambray toilets and water load before you leave the day area. Official drinking water is listed at Mambray Creek; still carry your own as backup (rainwater elsewhere is seasonal / non-potable). Finish with enough daylight for the last kilometres.

Hazards

Seven hours in summer heat is a poor idea. Prefer April–October. Coverage is patchy in low-lying areas — official park wording. Carry a charged phone, Emergency+, and consider a PLB on this walk.

Turning around

Same start and finish — no car shuffle. Turn around when people have had enough. Mambray Creek campground is next door if you booked it (separate fee).

Packing list (jacket, grip, water) lives on the gear hub, not as a shop list on every walk. Pairing and a shorter option: plan your visit · Fire-recovery landscape notes.

Extra tips

  • This is the “I have a full cool-season day at Mambray” walk — not a first-afternoon special.
  • Wildlife: lace monitors, echidnas, kangaroos. Give them space; do not feed.
