  • Best for: Camping, families, first west-side visit, Hidden Gorge start
  • Time: Half day for short loops; full day for Hidden Gorge; overnight if camped
  • About 45 km north of Port Pirie via Highway 1. Official park page lists 263.45 km from Adelaide. 2WD is normally fine to the day visitor area and campground.

Why Mambray is the default west-side hub

If you want the highest standard of park facilities — showers, flushing toilets, camp kitchen, drinking water, picnic/BBQ — you are at Mambray Creek, not Alligator Gorge. River red gums, a level campground, and a menu of walks from 1.6 km to 18 km make this the family and camping node.

Treat it as a base. One short loop plus a lookout beats trying Hidden Gorge after a 3.5-hour Adelaide drive.

Camping versus day use

Day visitors pay vehicle entry and use the day visitor area. Overnight campers book Mambray Creek or Baroota Ruins online before arrival — a completely separate per-night fee. Official listing also showed park accommodation from $27.50 per night (Mambray Creek Cabin; Alligator Lodge has been listed closed in fire-recovery alerts). [VERIFY] live amounts.

Bring your own firewood. Collection is prohibited. Fires only in designated pits, and not during the published fire-restriction window or on total fire-ban days. Confirm the current NPWS park fire-restrictions PDF.

How you actually arrive

Highway 1 between Port Pirie and Port Augusta, then the signed Mambray Creek entrance. Official park distance from Adelaide is 263.45 km — most groups overnight rather than squeeze Hidden Gorge after a 3–3.5 hour drive. 2WD is normally fine to the day visitor area and campground. Fill fuel in Port Pirie or Port Augusta; there is no kiosk in the park.

Day parking is the visitor car park, not campground pads. If you booked a site, display proof as required. Take rubbish out — no bins.

Walks that belong to this gate

Wirra Water Loop (1.6 km) is the family introduction. Daveys Gully (2.4 km / ~1 hr) is the short “we only have an afternoon” hike with Spencer Gulf sunset views. Sugar Gum Lookout / Mambray Valley (~8 km / 3 hrs) is the wallaby-watching walk. Hidden Gorge (18 km / 7 hrs) is the west-side hard day — not a first-afternoon stack.

Black Range Trek (26 km one way) starts here and finishes at Melrose. Backpack sites close in fire-danger season and cannot be booked online — phone the Yorke and Mid North Office.

This is not Alligator Gorge

People mix the names. Alligator Gorge is a different driveway from Wilmington, a van-unfriendly road, and a quartzite slot. Mambray is the camping valley. Horrocks Pass and Port Germein Gorge are public roads around the range if you must change nodes — they eat half a day if you treat them as a casual hop.

Highlights at a glance

  • Mambray Creek campground (~49 sites) with hot showers and camp kitchen
  • Wirra Water Loop and Daveys Gully short walks
  • Hidden Gorge 18 km loop
  • Sugar Gum Lookout / yellow-footed rock-wallaby habitat
  • Baroota Ruins campground nearby (9 sites)

Practical tips

  • Fill fuel in Port Pirie or Port Augusta. Carry drinking water as backup.
  • Book peak weekends early. Display booking proof as required.
  • Non-potable rainwater at some points is seasonal — do not plan on it.
  • Install Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi before you drop into the valley. Coverage is patchy.
  • If you only have two hours after the Adelaide drive, Wirra Water + picnic beats starting Hidden Gorge at 2pm.

FAQ — Mambray Creek

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I turn up and pay camping on site?

No. Official rule: camping fees must be paid before you arrive. Book online (or in person at published booking agents). Walk-in backpack sites cannot be booked online — phone the Yorke and Mid North Office.

Is Alligator Gorge next door?

No. Different entrance via Wilmington. There is no public road through the park. Horrocks Pass and Port Germein Gorge are the nearby east–west public roads over the ranges.

Is Hidden Gorge a family afternoon?

No. Official listing is 18 km / about 7 hours. Use Wirra Water (1.6 km) or Daveys Gully (2.4 km) after a long drive. Save Hidden Gorge for a cool-season day that starts at the visitor area, not at an Adelaide driveway.

Can I rely on park water?

Official drinking water is listed at Mambray Creek. Rainwater elsewhere is seasonal and often non-potable. Carry a backup on every hard walk.
