Park overview
Guide updated · verify NPWS SA for live area status
Mount Remarkable National Park is a Southern Flinders Ranges park of three visitor gates plus a forest MTB node: Mambray Creek (west, Highway 1, facilities and camping), Alligator Gorge (north, quartzite slot from Wilmington), Melrose (east, 960 m summit and town beds), and Willowie (beginner/intermediate singletrack). There is no public through-road. Most first visits pick one node and one hard walk — not “the whole park.”
Always verify live conditions on the official NPWS SA park page and alerts and CFS. This site is independent and unofficial. There is no practical public transport into the park.
Recommended order: pay vehicle entry → pick one gate that matches vehicle, fitness and overnight plans → one main walk → leave Hidden Gorge, Epic Trail and the other two gates for another day unless you already know the range.
How to choose an area
Camping / families / first west-side visit: Mambray Creek — showers, picnic, Wirra Water and Daveys Gully. Hidden Gorge is a different full day from the same hub.
Gorge photographs / quartzite slot: Alligator Gorge / The Narrows via Wilmington. No vans, trailers or buses on the access road. Re-check fire-recovery maps.
Summit / town beds / Epic Trail start: Melrose. The 960 m hike is hard (~13 km / 4 hrs). Overnight is the default after the Adelaide drive.
Mountain biking: Willowie loops for skills and families; Remarkable Epic Trail (~38–39 km, allow 5–8 hrs) from Melrose for a committed intermediate day — not after the summit.
A simple order on any day: pay entry → pick one node → one hard walk → picnic or booked camp → leave daylight for the drive home or the other gate tomorrow.
Geography in plain English
Think of Mount Remarkable as an isolated 960 m peak sitting above Willochra Plain, not a highway you drive through. Highway 1 (west) feeds Mambray Creek river-red-gum camping. Main North Road / Wilmington feeds Alligator Gorge — a steep drop into quartzite. The east-side town of Melrose holds the summit trailhead and Epic Trail start. Willowie forest is a separate MTB/picnic node. Horrocks Pass and Port Germein Gorge are public east–west roads around the park, not through it.
Official distance from Adelaide is 263.45 km — plan about 3–3.5 hours each way. Port Pirie, Wilmington and Melrose are the usual fuel and bed towns. Coverage is patchy in gorges and low ground. Traditional Owners (Nukunu / Wapma Thura context in the Southern Flinders) have ongoing connection to this country — this independent guide does not speak for them or for NPWS SA.
Fees and logistics that apply everywhere
Vehicle entry and camping are separate systems. Official snapshot (23 August 2026): $14.40 per vehicle (pay before arrival) and park accommodation from $27.50 per night. Amounts change — confirm on parks.sa.gov.au. This site never affiliates vehicle entry or official camping. Overnight / backpack sites close in fire-danger season (usually 1 Nov–30 Apr). Park closes on Catastrophic fire-danger days and may close on Extreme.

What not to combine
- Summit hike + Hidden Gorge (18 km / 7 hrs) on a first afternoon from Adelaide.
- Summit + The Narrows as a “same-day loop” — different gates, no through-road.
- Full Epic Trail after a dawn summit — official allow 5–8 hours on the bike loop alone.
- A van or trailer down the Alligator Gorge access road.
