Mount Remarkable trails & gorges
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify NPWS SA
Start with a clear node + one hard walk decision. The west gate (Mambray) holds family loops and Hidden Gorge. The north gate (Alligator Gorge) holds The Narrows. The east gate (Melrose) holds the 960 m summit. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on NPWS SA and park alerts. Heat, fire-danger closures and gorge-section status change.
Decide before you lace up
- Easy / short: Wirra Water Loop, Daveys Gully — Mambray facilities hub.
- Moderate gorge: The Narrows (and the 8.5 km Alligator Gorge hike if open and you started early).
- Hard days: Summit hike, Hidden Gorge, Black Range Trek — pick one, start early, confirm it is open, and have a turnaround plan.
- MTB: Willowie beginner/intermediate loops, or the Remarkable Epic Trail from Melrose (5–8 hrs) — not a walk, and not after the summit.
Trying two hard walks plus a “quick look” is how first visits run out of daylight. Pick the row that matches the group, then open the full trail page for getting-there detail.

Trails FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk in Mount Remarkable National Park?
Pick a node. Fit groups from Melrose: the summit hike (hard, ~4 hrs). Gorge visitors: The Narrows (~2 km / 2 hrs) if the access road and closures map allow. Families at Mambray Creek: Wirra Water Loop. Do not stack the summit with Hidden Gorge on a first afternoon. Always verify with NPWS SA.
How hard is the summit versus The Narrows?
The summit is a hard 13 km loop with real elevation and exposure. The Narrows is moderate but rocky underfoot with steep steps. Hidden Gorge is a 7-hour day. Official grades change — confirm on parks.sa.gov.au.
Can I do the summit and Alligator Gorge on the same day?
Usually a bad first-visit plan. They are different entrances with no public through-road. Pick one hard objective.
Where should families start?
Mambray Creek: Wirra Water Loop (1.6 km) then optional Daveys Gully (2.4 km). Skip Hidden Gorge (18 km / 7 hrs) and the summit on a first family afternoon. Vehicle entry and camping are separate bookings.
Do I need a walk permit?
No extra walk permit is listed for standard day walks (summit, Narrows, Mambray loops). Vehicle entry still applies. Backpack sites on Black Range Trek are a different product and close in fire-danger season.
