Alligator Gorge Hike

Area: Alligator Gorge

Follow the length of Alligator Gorge from the Terraces, then (north-west) up Alligator Creek catchment to the Ring Route Track, past Eaglehawk Dam and Longhill camps to Blue Gum Flat, and back via The Narrows. Optional Battery Ridge add-on (~1 extra hour).

Do not pair: Do not stack this with the summit hike the same day (different nodes, different energy).

Turnaround: Turn around anywhere in the gorge and retrace, or drop to The Narrows-only plan.

  • Starting late and finishing the steps in the dark.
  • Ignoring live gorge-closure maps.
  • Moderate (official listing)
  • Allow 4 hrs return
  • 8.5 km return (official)
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Walkers who want the full gorge, not only The Narrows slot

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au (Mount Remarkable National Park) and current closures/alerts before you go. Alligator Gorge sections and Ali Lookout have carried post-fire restrictions.

Where you start

Alligator Gorge car park / day area

Same steep access as The Narrows. Confirm current open sections on the Alligator Gorge closures map. Vehicle entry applies. Limited facilities.

How to get there

  1. Same access as The Narrows: Main North Road 1 km south of Wilmington. No caravans, trailers or buses.
  2. Pay vehicle entry before arrival. Start early — 4 hours official walking time plus photos.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Follow the full length of Alligator Gorge. From The Terraces continue north-west up Alligator Creek to the Ring Route Track.
  2. Turn left on the vehicle track past Eaglehawk Dam and Longhill camps to Blue Gum Flat picnic area, then a short walk back to the car park via The Narrows.
  3. Optional: at Ring Route Track junction continue right (north-west) ~1 km to Battery Ridge for sugar gums and views over the western plains to Spencer Gulf. Add about an hour. [VERIFY] that spur is open.

What to expect

Official: 8.5 km return, 4 hours, moderate. You are in the gorge for most of it. Spring is the atmosphere season; summer is a heat march. Battery Ridge is an optional extra hour for sugar gums and western-plain views — not mandatory.

How the day works

Same car park as The Narrows. Same vehicle restrictions. Pack lunch and extra water. Blue Gum Flat is the picnic reset before the last climb to the car park.

Hazards

Four hours in a rocky creek line: twisted ankles, heat, and little shade. Post-2025 fire: verify the Alligator Gorge closures PDF. Ali Lookout is not a substitute add-on while it remains closed.

Turning around

You can always revert to The Narrows circuit. There is no car shuffle unless you planned Mambray Creek to Alligator Gorge as a one-way (13.8 km) with two cars — a different hike.

Packing list (jacket, grip, water) lives on the gear hub, not as a shop list on every walk. Pairing and a shorter option: plan your visit · Alligator Gorge & Narrows notes.

Extra tips

  • Best in spring (wildflowers, possible flowing water).
  • If time or fitness is short, walk The Narrows only.
  • Overnight camps along this system are a different product and close in fire-danger season.

Often paired with The Narrows— only if energy and weather allow.
