The Narrows Hike

Area: Alligator Gorge

Descend steep steps from Alligator Gorge Lookout car park into the gorge, view The Terraces, then walk south through The Narrows. Uneven, possibly wet and slippery gorge floor. Return via Blue Gum Flat picnic area.

Do not pair: Do not add Hidden Gorge (18 km) after The Narrows on a late first visit. Save it for another day.

Turnaround: Turn around in the gorge at any point and retrace to the steps. A shorter Narrows walk is still a proper outing.

  • Towing a van to the gorge road because maps show a picnic icon.
  • Treating 2 km as 20 minutes and skipping water.
  • Moderate (official listing)
  • Allow 2 hrs return
  • 2 km return (official)
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: The short gorge walk most visitors actually want

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au (Mount Remarkable National Park) and current closures/alerts before you go. Alligator Gorge sections and Ali Lookout have carried post-fire restrictions.

Where you start

Alligator Gorge Lookout car park

Steep, narrow access road from 1 km south of Wilmington on Main North Road. Unsuitable for caravans, camper trailers or buses. Vehicle entry applies. Facilities at the gorge precinct are limited (accessible pit toilets; picnic). Confirm live open sections after the February 2025 Wilmington fire.

How to get there

  1. Do not take caravans, camper trailers or buses on the Alligator Gorge access road — official wording: very steep and unsuitable.
  2. From Wilmington, the turn is about 1 km south on Main North Road. From Mambray Creek this is a different node — no public through-road across the park.
  3. Pay vehicle entry before arrival. Park in the Alligator Gorge Lookout car park (one accessible space listed).

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Check the live Alligator Gorge closures map — Ali Lookout Walk and lookout platform were listed closed when this guide was re-checked; a section of Alligator Gorge may still be restricted.
  2. Descend the steep steps into the gorge. Sturdy shoes. View The Terraces to the north, then head south through The Narrows.
  3. Return to the car park via Blue Gum Flat picnic area as signed. Do not invent a scramble up the cliff.

What to expect

The Narrows is why people photograph Alligator Gorge: a tight quartzite corridor, red walls, boulder floor. Official: ~2 km return, 2 hours, moderate, suitable for most abilities — that still means steps, uneven rock and possible water. Wear sturdy shoes, not thongs.

From Alligator Gorge Lookout car park you descend steep steps, look north to The Terraces, then walk south through The Narrows and return via Blue Gum Flat picnic area. Google Street View trekker coverage exists on official pages if you want to preview the floor before you commit.

How the day works

This is the Alligator Gorge node, not Mambray Creek. Different entrance, different vehicle rules. Leave vans at Wilmington, Melrose or Mambray. Pay vehicle entry before you drive in.

A realistic first-visit day is: Wilmington approach, Narrows in the cooler morning, picnic at Blue Gum Flat or the gorge day area, then leave. Ali Lookout Walk (480 m) would have been the tiny add-on — it was listed closed with the lookout platform after the 2025 fire. Do not assume it is open.

Hazards and fire-recovery notes

Gorge floors concentrate heat and kill phone signal. Carry water, a torch and a charged phone anyway. Emergency+ needs a fix when you can get one — do not wait until you are in the slot canyon.

The February 2025 Wilmington fire burnt about a quarter of the park, mainly northern sections. Official update (27 July 2026 alert, still current when re-checked 13 Sep 2026): Alligator Gorge hub is listed open; The Narrows Hike is listed open; Ali Lookout Walk and platform closed; Alligator Lodge closed. A section of Alligator Gorge may still show on the closures map. [VERIFY] the PDF map the morning you go.

Turning around

Reverse is up the same steps or via the signed Blue Gum Flat return. If the floor is a creek, slow down or turn around — wet quartzite is skating-rink work. There is no wheelchair-accessible trail at this node; the drive-in views are the official accessibility note.

Packing list (jacket, grip, water) lives on the gear hub, not as a shop list on every walk. Pairing and a shorter option: plan your visit · Alligator Gorge & Narrows notes.

Extra tips

  • It looks better after rain — and it is more slippery then.
  • This 2 km / 2 hr listing is not a twenty-minute dash if you move slowly on rock. Allow the full two hours.
  • Fine for sure-footed kids; not a pram or wheelchair trail (official: no wheelchair-accessible gorge trails).

Often paired with Alligator Gorge hike— only if energy and weather allow.
