Why the gorge is a different park day

Mambray is valley camping. Melrose is the summit. Alligator Gorge is the slot-canyon photograph. Mixing all three in one afternoon is how groups get cranky and dehydrated.

The Narrows is the usual first gorge walk. Extend to 8.5 km only if you started early and the closures map is clear.

Post-fire status (verify live)

February 2025 Wilmington fire: about 25% of the park, mainly northern sections. Official 27 July 2026 alert (still the live fire-recovery notice when re-checked 13 Sep 2026): key hubs including Alligator Gorge listed open; The Narrows, Hidden Gorge, summit and Epic Trail listed open; temporary closures Ali Lookout Walk/platform and Alligator Lodge. The park page still notes a section of Alligator Gorge may be restricted. Use the closures PDF, not this paragraph, on the morning you drive.

Access road — the real gatekeeper

Official: 1 km south of Wilmington via Main North Road, then a very steep access road unsuitable for caravans, camper trailers and buses. Leave long vehicles in Wilmington or Melrose. One accessible parking space is listed at Alligator Gorge — do not treat the car park as a coach bay.

Pay vehicle entry before you drop in. Screenshot the Alligator Gorge closures overlay PDF and Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi. Coverage dies in the slot.

The Narrows versus the 8.5 km hike

The Narrows is the usual first walk: steps from Alligator Gorge Lookout car park, Terraces north, Narrows south, return via Blue Gum Flat. Official about 2 km / 2 hours. Uneven quartzite; sturdy shoes; turn around on the floor if it is too rough.

The full Alligator Gorge hike is about 8.5 km / 4 hours. Battery Ridge is an optional extra hour. Do not start that at 2pm. Hidden Gorge is a Mambray walk — different gate, 18 km.

If you are towing

Do not take the gorge road. Picnic at Mambray, sleep in Melrose, or walk The Narrows from a car you left in Wilmington. The van ban is an official access fact, not a suggestion.

Highlights at a glance

Practical tips

  • After rain: better photos, worse traction.
  • Ali Lookout is not a 15-minute add-on while listed closed — skip it.
  • Blue Gum Flat is the picnic reset, not a second hard walk.

Facilities & services

FAQ — Alligator Gorge

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I take a caravan to Alligator Gorge?

No. Official park page: the access road is very steep and unsuitable for caravans, camper trailers and buses.

Is Ali Lookout open?

It was listed closed (walk and lookout platform) on the fire-recovery alert updated 27 July 2026. Re-check parks.sa.gov.au closures before you plan it as a 15-minute add-on.

Is The Narrows a wheelchair trail?

No. Official facilities include an accessible pit toilet and one accessible parking space, but the gorge floor is uneven quartzite with steps. Do not treat it as a formed all-abilities path.

Can I do the gorge and the summit the same day?

Usually a bad first-visit plan. Different gates, no through-road, and the summit is already a hard 13 km loop. Pick one.
