Alligator Gorge & The Narrows

Half day to 4 hours at the northern nodeBest for: Walkers who want the quartzite slot without a 7-hour loop

Wilmington approach, no vans on the steep gorge road, The Narrows as the primary walk, optional extend to the 8.5 km Alligator Gorge hike if open and you started early.

This node is not Mambray. Official access: 1 km south of Wilmington via Main North Road, then a very steep road unsuitable for caravans, camper trailers and buses. Leave long vehicles in Wilmington or Melrose. One accessible parking space is listed — do not treat the car park as a coach bay.

The usual first walk is The Narrows: about 2 km / 2 hours from Alligator Gorge Lookout car park, Terraces north, Narrows south, return via Blue Gum Flat. Uneven quartzite; possibly wet; sturdy shoes. The full Alligator Gorge hike is about 8.5 km / 4 hours — only if you started early and the live closures overlay is clear. Battery Ridge is an optional extra hour. Do not start that at 2pm.

February 2025 Wilmington fire: about 25% of the park, mainly northern sections. Fire-recovery alert updated 27 July 2026 (still the live notice when re-checked 13 Sep 2026): Alligator Gorge hub and The Narrows listed open; Ali Lookout Walk/platform and Alligator Lodge listed closed; a gorge section may still be restricted. Use the closures PDF, not this paragraph, the morning you drive. After rain: better photos, worse traction. After heat: start earlier or skip the 8.5 km extension.

Track status, weather, camping availability and fire ratings change — verify on NPWS SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Paid vehicle entry does not mean camping is included.

Timeline

  1. Night before / before you leave town

    Vehicle, vans, closures

Pay vehicle entry. Leave long vehicles at Wilmington or Melrose — official road is very steep and unsuitable for caravans, trailers and buses. Open the live Alligator Gorge closures overlay PDF. Screenshot Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi. Agree Plan A = Narrows, Plan B = picnic at Blue Gum Flat or turn around if the floor is too rough.

  2. Morning

    The Narrows (2 km / 2 hrs)

Steps down from Alligator Gorge Lookout car park, Terraces north, Narrows south, return via Blue Gum Flat. Sturdy shoes. Water. This 2 km listing still takes up to two hours if you move carefully. Turn around on the floor if it is too rough. Not a wheelchair trail.

  3. If energy, time and the map are clear

    Full Alligator Gorge hike

Official 8.5 km / 4 hrs via the gorge then Ring Route past Eaglehawk Dam and Longhill camps to Blue Gum Flat. Battery Ridge optional extra hour. Only if you started early. Do not start this at 2pm.

  4. Reset

Blue Gum Flat picnic, then out

Picnic tables, then the steep road back to Wilmington. Do not add Hidden Gorge (Mambray gate, 18 km) or the summit (Melrose gate) on the way home. Ali Lookout is not a 15-minute add-on while listed closed.

  5. If the gorge road was a mistake

    Stop before the steep bit

Still towing? Do not continue. Picnic at Mambray, sleep in Melrose, or walk The Narrows from a car you left in Wilmington. The van ban is an official access fact.

  6. Leave while fresh

Steep road out + Wilmington services

The access road is as much the hazard on the way out. Drive it while you still have attention. Fuel, food and a van pickup live in Wilmington or Melrose — not at Blue Gum Flat.

Parking & access tips

  • One accessible space listed at Alligator Gorge — do not treat it as overflow for a van.
  • Do not take coaches, caravans, camper trailers or buses down the access road.
  • Leave long vehicles in Wilmington or Melrose and drive a car.
  • Pay vehicle entry before you drop in.
  • Screenshot Emergency+ and the closures overlay on town Wi-Fi. Coverage dies in the slot.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Hidden Gorge (starts at Mambray, 18 km / 7 hrs)
  • Ali Lookout Walk/platform while listed closed
  • Summit hike the same day — different gate, no through-road
  • 8.5 km gorge hike starting after lunch
  • Towing down the access road “just to see”

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Walkers who want the quartzite slot without a 7-hour Hidden Gorge day.
  • People who can leave vans in Wilmington or Melrose.
  • Not a first-afternoon stack after the summit.

Fire recovery

  • Use the Alligator Gorge closures overlay PDF, not memory. Ali Lookout is not a 15-minute add-on while listed closed.
  • A gorge section may still be restricted — the PDF wins over this page.

Decision gates

  • Still towing at the top of the access road: stop.
  • Floor too rough or wet: turn around — Blue Gum Flat still counts.
  • After 1pm with no 8.5 km start: picnic and leave.

What success looks like

  • Whole group back up the steep road with ankles intact.
  • The Narrows done well, or an honest turnaround on the floor — not a 2pm 8.5 km start.
  • Vans still in Wilmington, not on the gorge road.

Next trip upgrade

  • Full 8.5 km gorge hike on a cool early start when the closures PDF is clear.
  • A Melrose night if you also want the summit — different gate, different day.
  • Read the fire-recovery article before you trust last year’s map.
