Official: 26 km one way, recommended as a multi-day. Mambray Creek to Melrose via Black Range and over Mount Remarkable. Steep terrain, views of the Mambray catchment, Alligator Gorge basin and Black Range. Carry a topographic map. Tell a responsible person your plan. This is not a first-visit product — use the summit day or Mambray family day instead unless you already overnight-walk.

Walk-in / backpack sites close in fire-danger season (usually 1 Nov–30 Apr) and cannot be booked online. Phone the Yorke and Mid North Office — (08) 8841 3400. Last Flinders fire-danger season ended 15 April 2026; confirm the next start on CFS before you pack a tent. Do not freelance a bush camp. Vehicle entry and camping fees are separate systems.

No public through-road: you need a car shuffle between Mambray and Melrose, or a booked pickup. Coverage is patchy in valleys. A PLB is a reasonable piece of kit, not a luxury. Park closes on Catastrophic days and may close on Extreme.

Track status, weather, camping availability and fire ratings change — verify on NPWS SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Paid vehicle entry does not mean camping is included.

Timeline

  1. Weeks before

    Season, camps, shuffle

Confirm fire-danger dates on CFS. If sites are closed, stop — walk a day hike from one node instead. Phone (08) 8841 3400 for walk-in sites (not the online camping grid). Arrange a car shuffle between Mambray Creek and Melrose. Pay vehicle entry. Camping fees are a second transaction. Download topo + park PDFs to Avenza.

  2. Night before Day 1

    Water, PLB, reverse plan

Self-sufficient water and food. Test the PLB/messenger. Screenshot alerts on town Wi-Fi. Agree a bail-out: reverse to Mambray if the first day is too slow — you are not required to finish at Melrose.

  3. Day 1 morning–afternoon

    Mambray toward the range

Start from Mambray Creek with a booked bush camp only. Steep country. Patchy coverage in valleys. Stay on the signed trek. Do not add Hidden Gorge kilometres “because you are already here.” Arrive at the booked site with daylight to set camp, treat water and eat — not a night stumble.

  4. Day 1 evening

    Camp discipline

No freelance site. Food sealed. Fires only if allowed in pits and not on a ban — own milled wood, no collection. PLB accessible, not buried in the pack. Agree Day 2 reverse: if the group is slow, return to Mambray rather than force Melrose.

  5. Day 2

    Over the mountain to Melrose

Summit country then descent to Melrose services. Do not add extra gorge loops or an Epic Trail victory lap. Eat and water in town. Collect the shuffle car.

  6. If fire ratings or closures hit

    Abort to a day hike

Catastrophic or Extreme can close the park. Fire-danger season closes backpack sites. Walk Wirra Water, The Narrows or the summit loop from one gate instead. Do not camp off-site.

Parking & access tips

  • Leave a car at each end or book a pickup. No through-road.
  • Mambray day/camp parking at the west hub; Melrose trailhead is not a long-stay dump for a second vehicle if it blocks access.
  • Pay vehicle entry for the park walking. Camping fees are separate.
  • Phone the Yorke and Mid North Office for walk-in sites — not the online grid.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • If sites are closed, walk a day hike from one node only
  • First visit to the park — use summit day or Mambray family instead
  • Fire-danger season (usually 1 Nov–30 Apr)
  • No car shuffle and no booked pickup
  • No PLB and no responsible person who knows the plan

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Experienced overnight walkers with a topo map and a bail-out culture.
  • Not a first Mount Remarkable visit. Not a summer freelance camp.

Booking culture

  • Walk-in backpack sites are not on the online camping grid. Phone the Yorke and Mid North Office (08) 8841 3400.
  • Last Flinders fire-danger season ended 15 April 2026 — confirm the next start on CFS before you pack a tent.

Comms

  • Coverage is patchy in valleys. Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi before you leave. PLB recommended. 000 needs reception.

What success looks like

  • Booked sites only, both days, and a shuffle car actually waiting in Melrose.
  • Group still making decisions at the end of Day 1 — not a forced summit in the dark.
  • If you aborted to a day hike, that still counts. Unofficial camping does not.

Next trip upgrade

  • If this was too much, the summit day from Melrose is the honest first hard walk.
  • Re-check CFS dates every season — backpack sites close when fire-danger season starts.
