Adelaide weekend — two nodes, one hard walk
Guide updated · verify NPWS SA the morning you go
Night in Melrose or Mambray Creek. Day 1: one main walk (summit or Narrows). Day 2: the other entrance or a short Mambray loop — not both hard walks.

Official distance from Adelaide: 263.45 km. That is a 3–3.5 hour drive each way, not a casual capital lookout hop. Overnight is the default. Same-day return from Adelaide is only honest if you skip everything except one short stop and still leave before dawn — most groups should not.
Pick a west camp (Mambray Creek — book before arrival) or an east town (Melrose beds). Driving around the range between them eats the weekend. There is no public through-road. Highway 1 feeds Mambray; Main North Road feeds Wilmington / Alligator Gorge; Melrose is the summit trailhead town.
One hard walk across the two days is the honest product: Saturday summit from Melrose, or Saturday Narrows from Wilmington, not both. Sunday is a short loop or picnic plus the 3–3.5 hour drive home. Two hard walks plus the Adelaide drive is how Sunday evenings fail. Vehicle entry is a separate system from camping. Check CFS and parks.sa.gov.au alerts before you lose coverage.
Track status, weather, camping availability and fire ratings change — verify on NPWS SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Paid vehicle entry does not mean camping is included.

Timeline
Friday evening or Saturday dawn
Drive and check in
Pay vehicle entry before you leave Adelaide. If camping at Mambray, you must already be booked — not a walk-up. Check CFS fire-danger and park alerts on home Wi-Fi. Fill fuel. Install Emergency+. Decide Saturday’s one hard walk out loud: summit (Melrose) or Narrows (Wilmington). Leave vans off the gorge road either way.
Saturday
One main walk
Melrose base → summit hike (13 km / ~4 hrs, hard, dawn start). Or Wilmington/Mambray base → The Narrows (2 km / ~2 hrs; no vans on the access road). Not both. Heat: start early. Do not add Hidden Gorge or Epic Trail kilometres.
Saturday evening
Reset where you slept
Melrose food and beds, or Mambray booked camp (showers/kitchen if you paid that product). Screenshot Sunday’s alerts. Pack the car so the morning is not a scramble.
Sunday
Short loop, then the drive home
Wirra Water / Daveys Gully or a Willowie picnic. Leave time for the 3–3.5 hour Adelaide drive. Do not start Hidden Gorge at 10am on departure day. Do not start the summit at 10am on departure day.
If heat or closures hit
Downgrade, do not stack
Catastrophic or Extreme fire ratings can close the park. Have a town/picnic Plan B. Do not invent a second hard walk because the first one was shorter than the brochure. A Melrose coffee and a Mambray picnic still count as a Southern Flinders weekend.
Sunday evening
Adelaide return + notes
Expect a late CBD return if you linger. Share the driving if two licences are in the car. Write down start times and what you skipped — that is the brief for booking a second night next time.

Parking & access tips
- Highway 1 for Mambray; Main North Road for Wilmington / gorge; Melrose for the summit trailhead.
- No through-road — pick one Saturday gate and live with it.
- Vans: Mambray or town. Never the Alligator Gorge access road.
- Pay vehicle entry before the weekend, not at a pad that cannot take payment.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Full Epic Trail loop on a two-day first visit (official allow 5–8 hours)
- Summit + Narrows on the same calendar day
- Hidden Gorge on Sunday before a 3.5-hour drive
- Same-day Adelaide return “because 263 km doesn’t look far”
- Towing down the gorge road to save time
Extra tips
Which night where
- Melrose night if Saturday is the summit. Mambray night if Saturday is family loops or you want showers in the park.
- Gorge day: leave the van off the Wilmington access road either way.
Decision gates
- If CFS is Catastrophic or Extreme: stay in town, do not invent a walk.
- If Saturday emptied the tank: Sunday is picnic + drive, not Hidden Gorge.
- If you still want both hard walks: book a second night.
What success looks like
- One hard walk, one short Sunday, everyone still safe on the highway home.
- Not summit + Narrows + Hidden Gorge “because we drove 263 km.”
Next trip upgrade
- A second night splits summit and gorge honestly.
- Read Plan your visit for fire season and the van rule before you hitch a trailer.
