Mambray Creek family day
Guide updated · verify NPWS SA the morning you go
Highway 1 to Mambray Creek: Wirra Water Loop, optional Daveys Gully, picnic/BBQ, campground look-see if you booked. No gorge road, no summit.

This is the facilities day: river red gums, flushing toilets, picnic/BBQ, and walks that do not require a dawn start. Official short loops: Wirra Water 1.6 km / about 30 min; Daveys Gully 2.4 km / about 1 hr with Spencer Gulf sunset views. Sugar Gum Lookout (8 km / 3 hrs) is a real hike if wildlife etiquette is agreed. Hidden Gorge (18 km / 7 hrs) is a different day from the same hub.
Vehicle entry is owed even if you only picnic (snapshot 13 Sep 2026: $14.40 per vehicle — [VERIFY] live). Camping is a completely separate pre-booked night (accommodation from $27.50 when re-checked — confirm live). Paying one does not cover the other. Book before you set up; rangers are not a walk-up desk.
This is not Alligator Gorge. Highway 1 west-side hub; 2WD is normally fine; vans belong here or in town, not on the Wilmington gorge road. Fill fuel in Port Pirie or Port Augusta. Take rubbish out — no bins. Coverage is still patchy in the valley — Emergency+ on town Wi-Fi before you drop in.
Track status, weather, camping availability and fire ratings change — verify on NPWS SA and CFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Paid vehicle entry does not mean camping is included.

Timeline
Night before (if camping)
Book the pad, pay entry, screenshot alerts
Camping must be booked before arrival. Pay vehicle entry as a second transaction. Screenshot the Mambray map, alerts and CFS rating. Pack water backup even though drinking water is listed at Mambray Creek — rainwater elsewhere is seasonal / non-potable.
Morning
Arrive via Highway 1
About 45 km north of Port Pirie. Park at the day visitor area, not on booked campground pads. Toilets, picnic, BBQ. Wildlife on the entrance road at dusk and dawn — slow down. Do not treat the camp kitchen as a day-use café if you are not booked overnight.
Late morning
Wirra Water Loop
Interpretive river red gums and rocky beds. Compact gravel with short steep bits — official notes say some people may need assistance. Not a guaranteed wheelchair circuit. Look for lace monitors and birds; do not feed anything.
Afternoon
Optional Daveys Gully or Sugar Gum
Daveys Gully (2.4 km / ~1 hr) if energy remains — sunset views toward Spencer Gulf. Sugar Gum Lookout (8 km / 3 hrs) only if the group is hike-ready and will stay on the track for wallabies. Hidden Gorge is a different day.
If you booked a site
Campground is not a day pad
Display booking proof. Hot showers and camp kitchen are for booked overnight guests. Bring your own firewood if pits are allowed — collection is prohibited. Take rubbish out. Walk-in backpack sites are a different product and close in fire-danger season.
If the drive already emptied the tank
Picnic is competence
Arrived at 2pm after Adelaide? Wirra Water + picnic beats starting Hidden Gorge. You can upgrade tomorrow. You cannot invent daylight.
Dusk / leave
Wildlife on the entrance road, then fuel towns
Kangaroos and wallabies use road edges at dusk — slow down on the Mambray access and Highway 1. If you are not camping, leave with daylight for Port Pirie. If you are camping, food away from wildlife; no bins means pack-out tonight, not “in the morning maybe.”

Parking & access tips
- Day visitor car park, not campground pads.
- 2WD is normally fine to Mambray. This is the van-friendly node — Alligator Gorge is not.
- Highway 1 between Port Pirie and Port Augusta; fill fuel before the entrance.
- Slow for wildlife on the access road at dawn and dusk.
- Pay vehicle entry before arrival even for a picnic.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Hidden Gorge (18 km / 7 hrs) on a first family afternoon
- Summit hike from Melrose the same day — no through-road
- Alligator Gorge with a van still hitched
- Sugar Gum Lookout if the group only wanted a 30-minute stroll — use Wirra Water
- Starting Hidden Gorge at 2pm after the Adelaide drive
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Families and first visits who want toilets, picnic and short loops.
- Campers who already hold a booking.
- Not groups who planned Hidden Gorge as a “quick add-on” after the highway.
Wildlife etiquette
- Lace monitors, echidnas and kangaroos are everyday. Yellow-footed rock-wallabies are more likely on the Sugar Gum walk — distance, no food, no drones.
- If an animal changes behaviour, you are too close. Telephoto beats five metres of “just one more”.
Fees
- Vehicle entry and camping are separate systems. Paying one does not cover the other.
- Walk-in backpack sites are not this campground and cannot be booked online.
What success looks like
- Kids still speaking to you at the picnic table.
- One or two short loops, not Hidden Gorge as a surprise.
- Rubbish in the car, not in the red gums.
Next trip upgrade
- A booked Mambray night makes Wirra Water a dawn loop, not a 2pm scramble.
- Sugar Gum Lookout for wallabies when the group already hikes.
- Leave Hidden Gorge and the summit for a cool-season dedicated day each.

- Daveys Gully HikePopular loop from Mambray Creek Day Visitor Area through Daveys Gully. Official recommendation when you only have a short time in the park. Sunset views looking out to Spencer Gulf.
- Mambray Valley Hike (Sugar Gum Lookout)Follow Mambray Creek upstream, then a short strenuous climb to Sugar Gum Lookout over the Alligator Creek / Mambray Creek junction. Restored Scarfes Hut (historic shepherd’s home) on the route. Quiet watching for yellow-footed rock-wallabies — do not approach or feed.
