Burnt country is still recovering. Walk signed tracks, treat unstable ground as closed if signed, and trust official maps over last year’s blog post — including this one.

What the recovery alert listed as open

Updated 27 July 2026: Alligator Gorge, Mambray Creek, Melrose and Willowie hubs; Summit Hike, Hidden Gorge, Black Range Trek, Monitor Loop, The Narrows, open Heysen sections; all designated MTB including the Epic Trail; all camping sites (vehicle) open; Mambray showers/toilets/kitchen listed available. That is a snapshot, not a live feed.

Download the 2026 park map and Alligator Gorge closures PDF. Stay on marked trails. Phytophthora hygiene stations exist in SA parks — use them. Do not collect firewood. Photograph recovery without leaving the track.

Seasonal closures that still rewrite plans

Overnight / backpack sites close in fire-danger season (usually 1 Nov–30 Apr). The whole park closes on Catastrophic days and may close on Extreme. Pest-control full closures were listed for 1–6 November 2026 and 15–20 November 2026. Last Flinders fire-danger season ended 15 April 2026 — confirm the next start on CFS.

What not to invent

Do not walk closed lookouts “just to see.” Do not collect souvenirs from burnt ground. Do not treat a green flush as proof that Ali Lookout is open. The closures PDF is the product, not this paragraph.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is the park open?

Mostly yes when re-checked 13 Sep 2026, with listed temporary closures (Ali Lookout Walk/platform, Alligator Lodge) and possible Alligator Gorge section restrictions. Separate pest-control closures were listed for 1–6 November 2026 and 15–20 November 2026. Always open the live alerts list.

Can I camp in the backcountry in summer?

Backpack / walk-in sites close in fire-danger season (usually 1 Nov–30 Apr) and cannot be booked online. Phone the Yorke and Mid North Office outside that window. Vehicle campgrounds are a different product — still book before arrival.
