Mount Remarkable’s name is a dare. The walk that matches it is the summit loop above Melrose: rocky, exposed, and worth the early alarm if you treat it as the only hard thing you do that day.

This is an unofficial planning guide. Distances, grades and closures change — confirm on parks.sa.gov.au before you leave.

Trailhead and entry

Pay vehicle entry before you arrive ($14.40 per vehicle on the official page when re-checked 13 Sep 2026 — [VERIFY]). Camping is not included. 2WD to Melrose is normally fine. There is no public through-road to Mambray Creek.

What the loop feels like

Northern and Southern Summit options let you loop rather than retrace every metre. Distance markers every 200 m on the classic route are useful turnaround cues. Views: Willochra Plain, Horseshoe Range, Black Range, Spencer Gulf on a clear day. Plane-crash remnants on scree in places — look, do not take souvenirs.

Heat, coverage, reverse

Official summer temperatures 30–45°C make a midday start a bad plan. Carry 2–3 litres. Coverage is patchy — 000 needs reception; install Emergency+ in town; a PLB is a reasonable optional extra on this walk. Reverse is walking back to Melrose. Always.

Who this walk is for (and who should wait)

Fit day-hikers who will overnight in Melrose or leave Adelaide before dawn. Families, first-timers with a late start, and anyone towing should pick Mambray loops or The Narrows instead. A full summit is not required for a successful Melrose morning — lower eastern-face views still count.

Failure modes worth saying out loud

Stacking Hidden Gorge after the summit. Starting at 11am in January. Trusting park rainwater. Leaving bags visible at the trailhead. Assuming you can drive to the 960 m cairn. Assuming 000 will work in the last kilometre of scree.

Where this sits in a two-day plan

Saturday: this hike. Sunday: Mambray short loops or The Narrows — not both hard walks. Epic Trail full loop is a different committed day from Melrose, not a reward lap.
