If you want river red gums, toilets that flush, and a walk that does not require a dawn start, Mambray Creek is the place. The usual mistake is treating it as a drive-through on the way to the gorge road with a van.
The short loops

Mambray Creek

Wirra Water Loop is the interpretive introduction (compact gravel, some short steep sections). Daveys Gully adds gulf sunset views in about an hour. Baroota Hike (6 km) visits ruins and the old cemetery if you want history without Hidden Gorge.
Camping realism
Level gravel sites among red gums. Check site dimensions for vans. Bring firewood if fires are allowed in pits. No bins. Walk-in backpack sites are not this campground and close in fire-danger season.
This is not the gorge road
Alligator Gorge is a different entrance from Wilmington. Do not tow through Horrocks Pass “just to peek” if you already used your daylight at Mambray. One node per day is the product.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Do I pay camping and vehicle entry?
Yes — they are separate systems. Vehicle entry (officially $14.40 per vehicle when re-checked 13 Sep 2026) plus a per-night camping fee booked before arrival. [VERIFY] live amounts on parks.sa.gov.au.
Is Wirra Water a wheelchair circuit?
Official notes say compacted gravel with short steep sections — some people may need assistance. Do not treat it as a guaranteed all-abilities path. Check current NPWS SA accessibility wording.
